Morrocan Culture
Meals are important social moments of the day for Moroccans. They therefore eat together
around large platters that are full of food. Everyone
picks up the food from these bowls with their right hand.
So although eating is a social moment, the men and women eat separately. Hospitality is also very important, which is why more food is always prepared than necessary.
Moroccans do not use cutlery like we do. They eat with their right hand as the left hand is considered unclean. The more "modern" Moroccans of course eat with cutlery. They don't eat from separate plates, but ne- men some food each time from a large, common bowl that sits on the center of the table. The low, round table occupies a central place in the living room. All the family members and guests sit on cushions around the table.
The table setting: tajine pot & cushion/pouf to sit on.
